Business Works | End of Session Recap

June 21, 2023 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM (CDT)

Description

Decisions made in Springfield can have a significant impact on the operations of your business.

Join us and learn from our local state legislators what bills were passed this session that will most impact our business community and get a glimpse as to what the General Assembly could expect during the Fall Veto Session.

All area State Representatives and State Senators have been invited. Confirmed participants are:

  • Senator Ellman
  • Senator Lewis
  • Senator Holmes
  • State Representative Yang Rohr
  • State Representative Ugaste

Senator, Seth Lewis

Seth Lewis was elected to the State Senate in November of 2022 after serving two years in the House of Representatives. Prior to his service in the General Assembly, Senator Lewis was a trustee for the Bartlett Fire Protection District. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Iowa and previously served as the Chief Operations Officer and Vice President of Operations for a small manufacturing business in Melrose Park. In addition to his current work in the Senate, he is an independent business owner and agent with State Farm Insurance. He has coached youth baseball, football, and basketball, and is a former Little League Board member and Board President. Senator Lewis and his wife Bhavna live in Bartlett, and together they have two adult sons.

Senator, Linda Holmes

Senator Linda Holmes was elected to represent the 42nd legislative district in 2006. As a former small business owner for two decades, she brings a business-conscious perspective to the legislature; ensuring state government protects the hard-working people of Illinois.

An Aurora resident since 1983, Holmes has been extremely active serving on a number of neighborhood committees and community organizations. Prior to being elected as state senator, Holmes served for two years on the Kane County Board. Her experience on the county board shaped her strong belief in local control and her advocacy for letting local government and its residents have a voice in making decisions that impact their community.

Senator Holmes believes fixing Illinois’ economy means creating good-paying jobs and making government more efficient. As a former owner of a remodeling company, Holmes knows firsthand how important sound infrastructure and construction are to our State. The construction industry provides good-paying jobs for hundreds of thousands of Illinois working families. She was a strong advocate of passing a capitol bill (2019) to repair and maintain Illinois’ aging infrastructure.

Holmes understands that middle class families in the district are paying more in property taxes than most parts of the state. She is committed to finding a bi-partisan solution to lower that burden. She passed legislation to update our state’s financial reporting systems and is against raising property taxes.

Holmes has been the Chief Sponsor on a myriad of legislation during her time in office that encourages job growth and impacts education, health care, public safety,  environmental issues and has a strong record of protecting animal-rights.

Holmes is a member of Senate President Don Harmon’s Leadership team, serving as Assistant Majority Leader. Holmes is a dedicated and hard-working public official, currently serving on the following committees:

  • Executive
  • Local Government (Vice Chair)
  • Labor
  • Agriculture

During the COVID-19 Pandemic Holmes was the Chair of the Senate Working Group on Unemployment Insurance.

State Representative, Janet Yang Rohr

Janet Yang Rohr represents Illinois' 41st House District, serving the Naperville and Warrenville communities. She began her first term in January 2021, joining the 102nd General Assembly.

Janet graduated from and previously served as a school board member for Naperville CUSD 203 schools. She earned her bachelor's degree in English and economics from Northwestern University and her masters in business administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

As a professional in the investment industry for most of the last two decades, Janet has been widely quoted and cited for her investment expertise. She's written and researched extensively on retirement and college savings plans, and she holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

She and her husband, Dan, live in Naperville with their three children.

Senator, Laura Ellman

Laura Ellman serves as State Senator to the 21st district, which includes all or part of the communities of Bolingbrook, Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Lisle, Naperville, Warrenville and Wheaton. In the Senate, Laura serves as Chair of the Environment and Conservation Committee and Vice-Chair of the Financial Institutions Committee. She is also assigned to the committees of Agriculture, Veterans Affairs, Appropriations and Transportation. In addition to her work in the state legislature, Laura works as an assessor for the National Laboratory. Prior to being elected in 2018, Laura worked in the fields of manufacturing and engineering dealing with regulations and policies for more than 25 years. As a long-time Naperville resident, she has enjoyed the community as a place to raise both of her children with her husband, Pete, as well as volunteer her time with organizations such as Feed My Starving Children and Habitat for Humanity.

State Representative, Dan Ugaste

A lifelong resident of Illinois, Representative Dan Ugaste was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs. He lived in Oak Park, Schiller Park and Lake Forest before graduating from Lake Forest High School in 1981. As the first person in his family to complete college, he graduated from Lake Forest College in 1985, and earned his Juris Doctor from DePaul University in 1988. He has been with the firm of Nyhan, Bambrick, Kinzie and Lowry Law Firm in Chicago for almost 25 years. He is an owner of the firm and served as VP until stepping down in 2018, when he ran for the Illinois House of Representatives. As a lawyer, he specializes in workers compensation defense and related employment matters. Prior to being elected to the House of Representatives, he served as a technical advisor to the Rauner administration for workers compensation. He also served as President of the Workers' Compensation Lawyers Association and Chair of the Workers' Compensation Committee for the ISBA.

Dan and his wife Denise moved their family to Geneva, IL in 1994. They are the parents of three adult daughters and currently have six grandchildren. Representative Ugaste served for many years on the Lake Forest College Alumni Board and as the Board President from April 2016 to April of 2018.
